Ghostbusters II opened to audiences in The United States on June 19, 1989. "Sorry, I missed it." Somehow as far as I was aware Ghostbusters II never played in theaters in Northern NJ until a Fall opening of November 3, 1989.
Long before Ghostbusters II was out, The Real Ghostbusters aired weekly on Saturday mornings and in syndication during the week. Like any other great franchise, Ghostbusters, especially The Real Ghostbusters had its share of merchandise including comic books by publisher NOW c o m i c s.
It was fitting that when Ghostbusters II was out that NOW would adapt the second Ghostbusters movie to comic book form. The 3 part mini series began to hit newstands in October 1989. With the trade paperback coming to finer retailers in December 1989.
I first saw Ghostbusters II during its second opening weekend, Friday, November 3, 1989. I was fortunate enough to be taken to it with my Uncle Joe, his wife, and my 3 year old cousin.
What we didn't know then was that my uncle tragically would be taken from our family the following morning. The date, November 4, 1989.
Eighteen Years Later
Over Summer 2007 I won a couple of eBay auctions for The Real Ghostbusters comic books. One auction contained the first part of this mini series. The other auction was for the "limited collectors edition" trade paperback. As this weekend approached I wanted to honor my uncle in a way that reminded me of happier times and in one way made sense. Something I knew I could do and would still mean a lot.
Beginning this past Friday, November 2, 2007 I began to scan the entire 3 part mini series. I spent all weekend doing this, finishing the scans and thumbnails this evening.
What makes this comic adapatation unique for the time is it ties The Real Ghostbusters to the films, like the episode, Citizen Ghost does. Also, its based on an earlier draft and includes scenes that were either never filmed or deleted from the final cut of Ghostbusters II.
We hope you enjoy this rare look back at The Real Ghostbusters and Ghostusters II. I hope it brings back good feelings from the era.
